Inside the BPD: Crime Scene Response Unit Trains for Potential Hazmat Incidents

This week, the Boston Police Department Crime Scene Response Unit, Forensic Division, and various detectives attended a training course for Advanced Forensic Investigation in a Hazardous Environment. The course is intended to prepare officers to collect evidence and process a crime scene during a hazmat incident that may require them to wear a hazmat suit with several layers of rubber gloves and an SCBA (self-contained breathing apparatus). This training is a necessity for our investigators to prepare for industrial incidents, chemical suicides or terrorist attacks, and incidents at Boston’s local radiological storage sites or biolabs. The BPD recognizes that it is more important than ever to be prepared for these events, not only for our patrol units, but also for our detectives who respond in the aftermath to process the scene and collect evidence.
