Arrest Made in Connection to Mother’s Day Shooting in Dorchester


At about 3:45 PM on Wednesday, May 17, 2017, members of the Youth Violence Strike Force in a coordinated effort with the Framingham Police Department and the Massachusetts State Police arrested Rumel Santana, 20, of Dorchester, in connection with a non-fatal shooting that occurred on Mother’s Day. At about 1:19 PM on Sunday May 14, 2017, officers responded to a call for shots fired in the area of 28 Downer Avenue in Dorchester. On arrival, officers located an adult female victim suffering from an apparent non-life threatening gunshot wound. The victim, who is eight months pregnant, was transported to an area hospital where she was treated and later released. During the course of the investigation, the suspect was identified, located and placed in custody without incident. The suspect will appear in Dorchester District Court on numerous charges including Assault and Battery by Means of a Dangerous Weapon (to wit: Gun), Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, Discharging a Firearm within 500 Feet of a Dwelling.
