At about 6:30 PM on Thursday, May 25, 2017, members of the District B-3 (Mattapan) Neighborhood Drug Control Unit made an arrest for firearm and drug related charges in the area of Washington Street and MLK Boulevard.
While conducting a separate investigation in the area of Old Road and Glenway Street, officers observed a motor vehicle pull into the area and park. When no one exited the car, officers queried the vehicle and received information indicating that an occupant of the vehicle may be in possession of a firearm. The officers set up surveillance on the vehicle and its operator and over the course of the surveillance observed what they believed was a drug transaction. Officers made a stop of the vehicle and observed a backpack in the operator’s lap. Due to the information about a firearm that officers had received earlier, the officers conducted a pat frisk of the bag. During the frisk, the officers felt what they knew from their training and experience to be packaged marijuana. Officers opened the bag and recovered several medium and large bags of marijuana. When officers ordered the operator out of the vehicle, the operator stated to the officers that he had a firearm. Officers removed a loaded Ruger 9mm firearm from the operator’s waist before taking him into custody.
The officers arrested the operator, 21-year-old Derek Khalil Gaines-Green of Jamaica Plain, and charged him with Possession with Intent to Distribute Class D Drugs, Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, Unlawfully Carrying a Loaded Firearm, and Possession of a Firearm with Obliterated Serial Number. Also recovered from the motor vehicle were additional ammunition, cell phones, scales, packaging, and paraphernalia consistent with the sale of illicit drugs.
