One Less Gun: Illegal Firearm Recovered During Midnight Traffic Stop

At about 12:10 AM on Saturday, May 27, 2017, members of the Youth Violence Strike Force conducted a stop of a motor vehicle in the area of Columbia Road and Ceylon Street in District B-2 (Roxbury).

While on patrol, officers observed a motor vehicle traveling near the above address with a RI temporary plate that had expired on 5/22/17. Officers conducted a stop of the vehicle and spoke with the operator who reported the vehicle belonged to a friend. Officers queried the VIN on the car and discovered that it was unregistered and uninsured. When the officers ordered the operator out of the car, the operator became very nervous and was visibly shaking. The operator then placed the car in reverse and nearly struck the cruiser that was positioned behind it. The officers were finally able to remove the operator from the vehicle in order to conduct an inventory search prior to the vehicle’s tow. Upon searching the car, officers recovered a loaded Webley Mark IV .38 caliber revolver from the center console of the vehicle.

Officers arrested 26-year-old Hermano Joseph of Roslindale and charged him with Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, and officers wrote him a citation for operating an unregistered motor vehicle. During the booking process officers recovered a small plastic bag containing Oxycodone pills from Joseph’s pocket; Joseph was additionally charged with Possession of Class B Drugs.
