At about 1:40 PM on Tuesday, June 6, 2017, officers from District B-3 (Mattapan) were on patrol addressing quality of life issues in the area of the Morton Street corridor. As they approached a red light in their cruiser, they heard a loud bang they believed was a gunshot. As they proceeded toward the origin of the sound, they observed a male running on Morton Street carrying a firearm partly concealed by a cloth and wearing a camouflage print backpack. Officers exited their cruiser and pursued the male on foot, yelling commands for the suspect to drop the gun. As the officers pursued the suspect on Lorna Road, they observed the suspect discard the firearm under a parked car, then discard the backpack farther down the road. Officers were able to catch up to the suspect on Stow Road, where the suspect surrendered and was apprehended without further incident. Officers recovered the firearm, a loaded Jimenez JA Nine, from under the parked vehicle.

Officers then viewed surveillance video obtained from the original incident that showed the suspect shooting a firearm in the area of 915 Morton Street at two victims. The victims fled the scene and could not be located.

Officers placed 26-year-old Jonathan Brown of Boston under arrest and charged him with Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, Unlawfully Carrying a Loaded Firearm, Discharging a Firearm within 500 feet of a Dwelling, and Armed Assault to Murder (2 counts).
