One Less Gun: Loaded Firearm Recovered and Suspect in Custody After Foot Pursuit in Dorchester

At about 11:10 AM on Monday, July 10, 2017, officers assigned to the Youth Violence Strike Force made an onsite firearm arrest in the area of 15 Vassar Street in Dorchester. The officers were on directed patrol when they observed an individual riding on a bicycle, later identified as Craig Collins, 44, of Decatur, Georgia, behaving in a suspicious manner. Upon seeing the officers, the suspect suddenly changed directions and rode into the backyard of 41 Harvard Street in an apparent attempt to avoid interaction with them. As the officers were approaching the address, they observed the suspect, now on foot, returning from the backyard with his hands clutching at the front waistband area of his pants. As the officers got closer, the suspect suddenly took off running through several backyards while scaling fences and walls as he fled. The officers pursued the suspect and eventually placed him in custody in a wooded area near 15 Vassar Street. Officers then recovered a loaded 9mm Ruger P89 handgun that the suspect had discarded as he fled. The suspect will be arraigned in Dorchester District Court on multiple charges including Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, Carrying a Loaded Firearm on a Public Way, Possession of a Large Feeding Capacity Device, Trespassing and Resisting Arrest.
