BPD in the Community: D-14 Officers Take Kids Kayaking on the Charles

About 4 years ago, BPD District D-14 (Brighton) Community Service Officer Frank Hughes started the “Road to the Right Track” program for Allston/Brighton neighborhood youth. Back then, about 20 children from the community signed up to participate in a series of physical fitness challenges, healthy living discussions, and a mentoring program. Since then, the program has grown to over 110 kids who get together to work out two days a week year-round, and meet once a month to hear from guest speakers like former NE Patriot Troy Brown and learn about topics like juvenile diabetes, staying away from drugs and alcohol, and making smart life choices.

Last Friday, the D-14 officers took the kids kayaking on the Charles. Not only was the weather perfect, but there was a great turnout and everyone—kids and officers alike—had a fun time. One of the children was overheard saying, “I couldn’t wait for Friday so I could come here!”
