Keeping Boston Safe: Officers On-Site Motor Vehicle Crash and Arrest Carjacking Suspect

At about 12:50 AM on Saturday, August 12, 2017, officers from District (B-2) Roxbury were on patrol in the area of Elder Street when they heard what appeared to be a car crash. Officers responded to 695 Columbia Road where they observed two vehicles had collided and sustained damage. The two occupants of one vehicle exited and reported minor injuries to the officers, while the operator and sole occupant of the second vehicle exited and attempted to flee the scene on foot. Officers gave chase, and when the operator attempted to climb a fence behind the nearby KFC, they were able to stop him and place him in handcuffs. A pat frisk for weapons revealed an empty knife sheath in the operator’s waistband. At this time, officers were informed that the vehicle he had been driving had just been carjacked at knife-point from a female in the area of Mass Ave and Theodore Glynn Way. The operator was identified as 31-year-old Byren McGee of Dorchester. McGee was placed under arrest and charged with Leaving the Scene of a Motor Vehicle Crash involving Personal Injury and Carjacking. Further investigation revealed that McGee also had an active outstanding warrant issued out of Dorchester District Court for Assault and Battery by Means of a Dangerous Weapon and Threats to Commit a Crime.
