BPD Auto Theft Unit Continues Crackdown On Illegal Dirt Bikes in Boston: In an ongoing effort to address community complaints and quality of life concerns relative to off road vehicles including dirt bikes, mopeds and motor scooters being driven around the city in a reckless and irresponsible manner, members of the BPD’s Auto Theft Unit recently arrested four individuals and confiscated four off road vehicles in two separate incidents.
INCIDENT #1: On Sunday, August 13, 2017, members of the Boston Police Auto Theft Unit in coordination with officers from the Brookline Police Department and Massachusetts Environmental Police observed a group of individuals operating dirt bikes in a reckless and erratic manner in the area of Seaver Street and Elm Hill Ave. Officers followed the group and observed them enter Playstead Park. As officers approached this group, the group, upon seeing the approaching officers, attempted to flee the area. Officers were able to catch up to, detain and apprehend two individuals. Officers arrested a 25-year-old male from Boston and charged him with Operating After License Suspension, Operating an Uninsured Motor Vehicle, Failure to Stop for Police, Negligent Operation of Motor Vehicle and a Helmet Violation. Officers also arrested a 15-year-old male from Boston and charged him with Failure to Stop for Police, Operating a Moped while Unlicensed. Moreover, the suspect’s bikes, a Yamaha Zuma and Honda dirt bike, were towed from the scene.
INCIDENT #2: On Sunday, August 13, 2017, members of the Boston Police Auto Theft Unit along with members of the Massachusetts Environmental Police and Brookline Police were on patrol in the area of Franklin Park Zoo when they observed two individuals operating off road vehicles at high rates of speed while weaving in and out of traffic along Blue Hill Ave. Officers followed and observed the individuals pull into a Mobil Gas Station on Blue Hill Ave. After watching the operators dismount their bikes, officers quickly moved in and detained both operators. Officers arrested a 28-year-old male from Boston and charged him with Receiving a Stolen Motor Vehicle. Additionally, officers issued a summons to a 26-year-old male from Boston for the following violations: Operating a Vehicle with a Suspended License, Operating a Recreational Vehicle on Public Way, Operating without a Helmet and Operating a Unregistered Recreational Vehicle on Public Way. Moreover, the suspect’s bikes, a Yamaha motorcycle and quad recreational vehicle, were towed from the scene.
