ONE LESS GUN: BPD Officers Arrest Suspect on Gun-Related Charges in Dorchester

At about 7:31 PM on Tuesday, August 1, 2017, officers assigned to the Youth Violence Strike Force received information relative to an individual in possession of a firearm. While on patrol, officers observed the suspect enter a motor vehicle which officers stopped in the area of Greenwood and Erie Streets. With the vehicle stopped, officers quickly converged on the car and ordered the suspect to show officers his hands. Officers promptly observed the butt of a firearm (see photo) protruding from the suspect’s left pocket. The gun was immediately confiscated and the suspect taken into custody. The gun, determined to be a loaded Taurus 709 slim 9mm firearm with an obliterated serial number, was later checked into evidence. Officers arrested Randall Variste-Scott, 23, of Boston and charged him with the Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, Possession of a Firearm with an Obliterated Serial Number and Carrying a Loaded Firearm on a Public Way. To date, the men and women of the Boston Police Department have bravely taken close to 400 guns off the streets of Boston.
