One Less Gun: Two in Custody After BPD Officers Recover Three Loaded Guns Inside Unity Park in Roxbury

At about 9:54 PM on Wednesday, September 13, 2017, officers assigned to the Youth Violence Strike Force arrested two individuals and recovered three loaded firearms inside Boston’s Unity Park Playground located at 84 Maple Street in Roxbury. The officers were on patrol in the area when they observed eleven individuals loitering in the park with open containers of alcohol in plain sight. When the officers approached, they immediately observed an unsecured handgun on the ground near the feet of several individuals and ordered the group to back away from the weapon and get on the ground for officer safety. The firearm was later determined to be a loaded .45 caliber Taurus ACP handgun. Officers performed a pat frisk of all the individuals at which time they recovered a loaded .380 caliber MP Bodyguard handgun from inside the jacket pocket of Jason Woods, 24, of Roxbury, who was then placed in custody without incident. Officers checked the area and located a third firearm hidden under a piece of trash on the ground near the group which was determined to be a loaded .25 caliber Astra handgun. During the course of the investigation, officers learned that Keon Austin, 31, of Roxbury, was wanted on two outstanding warrants for motor vehicle related charges and placed him in custody without incident. The remaining individuals were identified and released. Both suspects will appear in Roxbury District Court. Jason Woods will be charged with Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition and Carrying a Loaded Firearm. Keon Austin will be arraigned on his warrants for Operating a Motor Vehicle After Revocation or Suspension (2 Counts).
