Keeping Boston Safe: Officers Able to De-escalate Incident Involving Suspect Armed with Butcher Knife

At about 12:30 AM on Friday, September 29, 2017, officers from District C-11 (Dorchester) responded to a radio call for a person with a knife in the area of Redwood Street.

Upon arrival, officers observed a male walking down the street with a butcher knife in one hand and a large kitchen knife in the other. Officers approached the suspect and gave him several commands to drop the knives, which the suspect ignored. After ignoring additional commands to drop the weapons, the suspect came toward the officers with the knifes raised, telling the officers to shoot him. As the suspect continued toward the officers, one officer was able to deploy his department-issued OC spray. The officers were then able to place the suspect into custody without further incident. Officers were informed that the suspect had an altercation with the victim during which the suspect attempted to attack him with the knives. The victim was able to escape and was transported to Carney Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Officers arrested 42-year-old Thuc Vu of Dorchester and charged him with Assault by Means of a Dangerous Weapon (Knife). The suspect was additionally found to have two active warrants out of Dorchester District Court.
