Suspect in Custody and Loaded Firearm Recovered After Officers Respond to Shots Fired and Locate Both Victim and Suspect with Non-Life-Threatening Gunshot Wounds

KEEPING BOSTON SAFE: At about 9:44 PM, on Friday, October 19, 2018, officers assigned to District B-3 (Mattapan) along with members of the BPD Youth Violence Strike Force responded to a call for shots fired in the area of the Walgreens Pharmacy located at 825 Morton Street in Mattapan. It should be noted that several officers were on patrol in the immediate area at the time of the incident which enabled a nearly instantaneous response. On arrival, officers located a 16-year-old male inside the entrance of the store suffering from a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. Officers also observed an armed security guard who was standing next to a loaded .380 caliber AMT handgun which was laying on the floor nearby. While rendering medical attention to the injured teen, officers were approached by a 20-year-old victim who stated that he had gone to the location to sell a phone to the juvenile male who was now being tended to and, after the two had concluded their transaction, the victim realized that some of the currency given to him was, in fact, counterfeit. When the victim attempted to confront the juvenile suspect, a physical altercation ensued, during which the suspect produced a firearm. As the two continued to struggle for control of the weapon, two shots were fired outside, one of which struck the suspect. The fight continued and spilled into the store, where the armed security guard standing inside the doorway ordered the suspect to drop the gun and the fight concluded. Officers asked the victim if he had been injured in anyway during the incident at which time he then realized that he too had been shot. Both the victim and the suspect were transported to area hospitals for treatment of their injuries which are considered non-life threatening.

The juvenile suspect, a 16-year-old male from Dorchester, remains guarded at the hospital at this time and will be booked on numerous charges upon his release including Delinquent to Wit: Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, Discharging a Firearm within 500 Feet of a Dwelling, Carrying a Loaded Firearm, Assault and Battery with a Dangerous Weapon and Assault with Intent to Rob. The suspect was also found to be wanted on an outstanding warrant for Armed Robbery sought out of Suffolk County Juvenile Court. It is undetermined at this time when the suspect will face arraignment in Boston Juvenile Court.
