ONE LESS GUN: BPD Officers Apprehend Gun-Toting Suspect Responsible for Damaging Several Parked Vehicles in an Ill-Conceived Effort to Escape Police

At about 2:08 am Saturday, February 17, 2018, members of the Youth Violence Strike Force were on patrol protecting and serving in the area of Columbia Road and Geneva Ave in Roxbury when officers observed a blue motor vehicle, with Florida plates, travelling along Columbia Road with a defective brake light. In light of the infraction, officers attempted to stop the vehicle to notify the operator of the safety violation, however, after initially slowing down, the operator, refusing to stop for the officers, accelerated and sped off at a high rate of speed. In light of the suspect’s increased speed and ensuing safety concerns to other motorists, officers discontinued the pursuit of the car. However, in his continued effort to flee the area, the operator struck several cars, most parked and unoccupied, at the intersection of Columbia Road and Glendale Street in Dorchester.

With his own vehicle damaged, the operator tried to escape the area on foot and was seen jumping out of his own vehicle while it was still moving. The unoccupied car then struck a traffic pole before coming to a stop after rolling into a fence in the area of 432 Columbus Ave. As the suspect attempted to flee on foot, responding officers were able to intervene and apprehend him before he could make good on his attempts to escape. A search of the suspect’s vehicle enabled officers to locate and confiscate a loaded black-colored firearm (see photo) that had been reported stolen out of Houston, Texas.

Officers arrested Tahjay Jones, 20, of Boston and charged him with Failure to Stop for a Police Officer, Driving to Endanger, Reckless Operation of a Motor Vehicle, Leaving a Scene after Causing Property Damage, Resisting Arrest, Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition and Receiving Stolen Property. Mr. Jones is scheduled to be arraigned at Dorchester District Court on Tuesday, February 20, 2018.
