Last week, the Boston Police Department learned that the father of one our own, former city councilor John Nucci (father of BPD Officer Mike Nucci), is suffering from Polycystic Kidney Disease and is in need of a kidney transplant. John Nucci’s father passed away years ago from PKD, and although he has known for some time that he carried the hereditary disease, John’s kidneys had been fully functioning until recently. At 65 years old, his kidneys are now functioning at only 15% of what they should, and without batting an eyelash, John's wife, his 31-year-old son Mike, Mike's two brothers, and even their aunts, uncles, and close friends, all volunteered to give up a kidney. Each family member was screened, but unfortunately, they have all been deemed ineligible. Since then, John and his family's search for a suitable donor has intensified, and they’re now appealing to the public to find a kidney donor as soon as possible.
For anyone interested in learning more about becoming a donor or signing up to be screened as a potential donor for John Nucci, please visit their Facebook page by clicking here: John Nucci PKD Awareness - Kidney Donor Needed, or by going directly to www.MGHlivingdonors.org and filling out the questionnaire for donor eligibility.
