One Less Gun: BPD's Youth Violence Strike Force Arrests One Suspect After Recovering Loaded Firearm

At about 10:36 PM on Monday, May 21, 2018, officers assigned to the Youth Violence Strike Force arrested one suspect during an ongoing investigation in the area of Levant Street and Bowdoin Street in Dorchester.

Officers observed a white motor vehicle come to a stop on Levant Street and observed the suspect, later identified as Gelson Barbosa, 21, of Dorchester, exiting from the passenger side of the motor vehicle. Upon seeing the officers, Barbosa quickly turned and placed both hands in the front area of his waist and began to hunch forward. Officers recovered a loaded Smith & Wesson .38 special revolver from the front of Barbosa's waist.

Gelson Barbosa was arrested without incident and will be arraigned in Dorchester District Court on charges of Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, Carrying a Loaded Firearm, and Unlawful Possession of a Firearm Subsequent Offense.
