At about 1:30 AM on Sunday, May 27, 2018, officers from District B-2 (Roxbury) conducted a traffic stop in the area of Burrell Street and Norfolk Avenue.
While on patrol on Burrell Street, officers observed a male walk by their parked cruiser then stop a short distance behind it. The officers took notice of the individual because he held both hands tightly at his waistband and continued to look back at officers. From their training and experience, the officers knew these were characteristics that are often displayed by persons who may be armed with a firearm. In order to investigate further, officers reversed their cruiser down the street so that they may speak with the male. As the officers exited the cruiser, the male walked over to a group of people and started talking. Seeing the officers approach, the group quickly walked away, while the male stayed to speak with the officers. As the officers conversed with the male, they noticed that the male’s hands moved freely and he no longer appeared as if he were avoiding the officers. Believing that the male had passed the firearm to a female in the group, the officers re-entered their cruiser and continued their patrol in search of those individuals.
As they drove up Burrell Street, officers observed a vehicle improperly signal a turn at Batchelder Street and Burrell. As the vehicle passed the officers’ cruiser, the officers recognized the passenger as one of the females in the group and the operator as 25-year-old Lino Correia of Roslindale. The officers followed the vehicle and observed several violations of the Massachusetts auto laws. The officers conducted a stop of the vehicle for those infractions. Due to their previous observations, they conducted a frisk of the occupants and the vehicle. During the frisk, officers recovered a loaded Glock 42 firearm on the driver’s side floor. Officers arrested Correia and charged him with Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, and Unlawfully Carrying a Loaded Firearm. He was also issued a citation for the auto laws violations. Correia will be arraigned at Roxbury District Court.
