Suspect Connected to Brighton Convenience Store Robberies

Today Boston Police apprehended a suspect wanted in connection with armed robberies that occurred at two Brighton convenience stores. Detectives investigating the robberies developed information that 24 year old Miguel Vargas of Brighton was a participant in the incident which occurred at the Quality Market on December 28, 2010. Vargas was placed under arrest and charged with the following violations: Accessory before the Fact, Weapon Unlawful Carry, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, Unlawful Carry of a Loaded Firearm and Armed Robbery.

As the result of an extensive investigation and information received from a person known to the Commonwealth the probable cause has been established that suspect Vargas provided a loaded firearm to the suspect arrested for an Attempted Armed Robbery at the Tedeschi’s located at 241 Market Street on January 8, 2010. It was also determined that Vargas was a participant in the Armed Robbery of the Quality Market at 140 N. Beacon Street on December 28, 2010.

Early this morning on January 12, 2010 at approximately 5:30am, members of the BPD SWAT Team gained a forceful (no knock) entry into apt. 256 at 89 Faneuil St in an effort to execute a Brighton District Court Search Warrant. As the SWAT team members were securing the apartment and the numerous occupants, a member of the SWAT team was forced to discharge two rounds at a pit bull that menaced the officers. This discharge resulted in the animal being secured in a bathroom inside the apartment. The dog was eventually removed by Animal Control. As a matter of standard procedure, the Firearm Discharge Investigation Team will review the discharge of the officer’s weapon.

During the initial entry into the apartment an officer from the SWAT Team, who was providing exterior cover, observed what appeared to be a firearm ejected from a window of the targeted apartment. It was later determined that this was suspect Vargas' bedroom. When the apt. was secured suspect Vargas was the only person present in the room. This weapon was secured in place, photographed by the Crime Scene Response Unit. On further investigation this "weapon" was determined to be a pellet gun.

Vargas is expected to be arraigned today in Brighton District Court.
