Speeding Lands Suspect in Jail for Gun Possession

Early this morning around 12:44AM, officers from District B-2 (Roxbury) arrested suspect, Irvin Andrews, 28 of Dorchester and charged him with Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of a Loaded Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, Tampering with Identifying Numbers of a Firearm, and Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Second Subsequent Offense.

Officers were on patrol in the area of Dudley and Washington Streets when they observed a motor vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed from Dudley St. toward Malcolm X Boulevard. Based on their observations, officers followed the car and conducted a traffic stop at Tremont and Prentiss Streets. There, officers approached the car and initiated a conversation with the operator about his license and registration. Once the door was open, officers immediately detected a strong odor of burnt marijuana. Officers asked the occupants if there was anything in the car that should not be there.  The front seat passenger responded to officers that they had just recently smoked in the car but there was nothing in the car right now. The same passenger then admitted to officers that there may be a “little bit of weed” in a grinder that she had.

Based on the strong smell of marijuana, and the passenger’s admission, officers removed the passengers of the car to further investigate. Once the passengers were removed, officers located a loaded firearm tucked under the front passenger seat. Once the gun was located, all passengers were placed in handcuffs. Once the passengers were placed into handcuffs, the suspect, without being told of why he was being arrested, told officers, “The gun is mine, let the girls go!”

The two passenger were then released with one issued a city ordinance for possession of marijuana.
