At about 3:18am, on Monday, May 30, 2011, officers from Area C-6 (South Boston) responded to a call for a person breaking into cars in the area of 460 W. Broadway.  While en route to the call, officers observed an individual who matched the description of the suspect wanted in connection with the car break walking in the area of 325 W. 3rd Street. As officers got closer, officers observed the suspect drop an object and then, upon seeing the officers, duck into an alley. Upon closer inspection, officers observed and recovered a Canondale bicycle which was missing a wheel. Officers were able to apprehend the suspect. A search of the suspect enabled officers to see and seize a GPS device and a blue screw driver.      Approximately three hours later, the owner of the bike entered Area C-6 (South Boston) to report her bike stolen. The owner showed officers a picture of the wheel of the bike, minus the frame of the bike, still securely chained to a city light post. The bike was returned to the owner. According to the owner who was greatly appreciative, the value of the bike retails at about $3,500 (US Currency).

Officers arrested William Hegarty, 24, of Boston and charged him with Breaking & Entering a Motor Vehicle, Receiving Stolen Property and Possession of Burglarious Tools.
