One Less Gun: Officers Arrest One and Recover an Illegal Firearm in Roxbury

At about 6:35 PM on Thursday, September 25, 2014, members of the Youth Violence Strike Force made an onsite arrest and recovered an illegal firearm in the area of Bower Street and Walnut Avenue in Roxbury.

While on patrol in the area of the above location, known to officers as a hangout spot for active gang members, officers observed four individuals trespassing. Each of the individuals are known to officers as having prior firearm convictions. Seeing the individuals together in a group heightened officers’ safety concerns. As officers exited their vehicle in an attempt to speak to the group, one of the individuals, upon seeing officers, immediately turns away and began to flee the area. As officers continued walking toward the group, the individual began to look over his shoulder, sprinting away from officers with his right hand clenching his waist in an apparent effort to prevent an object from falling. Following a foot pursuit in which the suspect discarded the object, officers were able to place the male under arrest. Upon retracing the route in which the suspect fled, officers were able to recover a black Jennings .22 caliber firearm loaded with four rounds of live ammunition.

Officers arrested a 17-year-old juvenile of Dorchester and charged him with Delinquent to Wit: Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of a Loaded Firearm, Firearm with Altered/Obliterated Serial Numbers, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, and Possession of Class D Drugs.
