One Less Gun: Officers Arrest One, Recover Loaded Firearm on Busy Street in the South End

At about 8:00 PM on Saturday October 31, 2015, officers assigned to the Youth Violence Strike Force made an onsite firearm arrest for an incident which originated in the area of 44 Aguidilla Street in the South End.  Officers were on directed patrol in the area in response to several recent gun and gang related incidents.  As costumed children from the neighborhood went door to door trick or treating and enjoying Halloween, the officers observed a group of known gang members standing on the sidewalk on Aguidilla Street near Tremont Street.  The officers continued to watch the group and observed one of the men, Edwin Calderon, 28, of Boston, suddenly begin to walk away with his hands in his pockets while looking back at the officers several times.  Officers observed the suspect approach a parked car and place what appeared to be a firearm underneath it before breaking into a full sprint through O’Day Playground and out onto West Newton Street.  Knowing that there were young kids everywhere – one of the officers went to the parked car and secured what was revealed to be a loaded Ruger Mark II .22 caliber handgun while the other officer chased the suspect on foot through the park.  The pursuit lasted nearly a half mile but the officer caught up to the suspect and was able to place him in custody in the area of 5 Cumston Place.

The suspect will appear in Boston Municipal Court on charges of Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, Carrying a Loaded Firearm on a Public Way and Armed Career Criminal.
