One Less Gun: BPD K-9 "Kodi" Tracks Suspect After Foot Pursuit in Roxbury - Officers Arrest One, Recover Firearm

At about 11:47 AM on Saturday November 7, 2015, officers assigned to the Youth Violence Strike Force made an onsite firearm arrest in the area of 4 Schuyler Street in Roxbury.  Officers were on random patrol in the area when they observed a known gang member, Jose Martinez, 21, of Dorchester, walking towards them and exited their vehicle to speak with him.  When the suspect saw the officers, he immediately back pedaled away from them and began to run while clutching at his waist band.  The officers gave chase and followed the suspect into the rear of 274 Seaver Street where the suspect scaled a barbed wire topped chain link fence as the officers attempted to grab hold of him.  The suspect made it over, landing on the other side, now face to face with the officers with the fence between them.  At this time, the suspect took a firearm from his waistband and raised it towards the officers who immediately drew their weapons while ordering the suspect to drop the gun.  The suspect dropped the firearm, a loaded Fegarmy Arms Model PA-63 9mm, on the ground and began to run again.  After both officers climbed the fence, one remained with the discarded weapon while the other continued pursuit until he lost sight of the suspect in the area of Wayne Street.

Boston Police K-9 “Kodi” and his handler responded to the scene and tracked the suspect to the rear of 4 Schuyler Street where officers located him hiding inside of a garage.  The suspect was taken into custody without incident and will appear in Roxbury District Court on charges of Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, Carrying a Loaded Firearm on a Public Way, Breaking and Entering and Trespassing.
