One Less Gun: Officers Display Great Restraint When Faced with Armed Career Criminal

At about 9:30 AM on Wednesday, May 13, 2015, officers in District B-2 (Roxbury) responded to a radio call for a fight in the area of Dewey Street and Blue Hill Avenue in Roxbury.

While officers were en route to the scene and after several additional calls from witnesses, the 911 dispatcher upgraded the incident to a call for a person with a firearm and shots fired. The dispatcher broadcast a description of a suspect with a firearm leaving the scene in a motor vehicle. Members of the Youth Violence Strike Force observed the suspect vehicle a short distance away and attempted to conduct a stop of the car to no avail. The suspect then attempted to evade officers by operating his vehicle at a high rate of speed and ignoring several traffic signals and signs, in the process crashing into and causing damage to several vehicles along his flight path. The suspect continued to flee in his car across two police districts until he reached the area of 96 Harvard Street in Dorchester, almost two miles from the original scene, where he jumped from the moving vehicle. The suspect's vehicle came to a stop after colliding with a parked car, and as officers maintained the chase on foot, they observed the suspect wielding a firearm. Officers pursued the suspect into the rear of the above address where the suspect discarded the firearm by throwing it onto the roof of the residence. Officers were eventually able to apprehend the suspect and recovered the loaded Walther PK380 semi-automatic firearm.

Officers arrested 32-year-old Khamal McCalop of Dorchester and charged him with Operating an Uninsured Motor Vehicle, Reckless Operation, Failure to Stop, Wrong Way on a One Way, Speed Greater than Reasonable, Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, Carrying a Loaded Firearm, and Operating a Motor Vehicle without a License. Upon consultation with the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, McCalop will also be charged with Armed Career Criminal Level I and Unlawful Possession of a Firearm (2nd and Subsequent Offense).
