Daily Dose of Great Police Work: Officers Crack Down on Illicit Drug Activity in Moakley Park, South Boston

At about 5:45 PM on Saturday, June 6, 2015, members of the Youth Violence Strike Force conducted a drug-related investigation that resulted in the arrest of one suspect and the seizure of illegal drugs and money in the area of Moakley Park at 1005 Columbia Road in District C-6 (South Boston).

Due to numerous community complaints regarding the on-going sale and open use of drugs in Moakley Park, officers have increased their patrol in the area. At the above date and time, officers observed three males standing near a motor vehicle. The officers detected a strong odor of burning marijuana as they engaged the group in conversation. As one of the males attempted to walk away, the officers observed the male drop a small plastic bag on the ground from his right hand. Further inspection of the discarded bag showed that it contained seven individually wrapped white rock-like objects consistent with crack cocaine.

Officers arrested 23-year-old Herbert Small of Norwood and charged him with Possession with Intent to Distribute Class B Drugs (Crack Cocaine) and Possession with Intent to Distribute Class B Drugs within 100 Feet of a Park/Playground. An inventory search of his motor vehicle revealed over $3,500 in US paper currency. This property was seized pending investigation. A second male was issued a civil citation for Possession of Less than One Ounce of Marijuana. The remainder of the individuals were identified and released.

BPD officers will continue to patrol and be visible in this area throughout the coming months.
