BPD in the Community: BPD Commissioner Evans Partakes in YouthConnect Unity Weekend Basketball Tournament

Yesterday, January 30, 2015, Boston Police Commissioner Evans was a special guest at YouthConnect’s Unity Weekend in Charlestown, an annual 2-day event that brings together young people from the Boys & Girls Clubs from across Boston to learn teamwork, make personal connections that reach beyond neighborhood stereotypes, and of course, play basketball!

YouthConnect is an innovative program of the BGCB in partnership with the Boston Police Department. The program partners licensed clinical social workers with the Boston police neighborhood stations, as well as the Youth Violence Strike Force and Boston School Police Unit, to target communities that see high rates of youth arrests. The social workers then provide on-site, in-home, community-based counseling services to youth in local “hotspots.” Since the program’s inception in 1996, the social workers and officers involved in YouthConnect have served more than 12,000 of the city’s most at risk youth by improving their family stability, helping them build trusting relationships, and preventing future criminal activity.
