One Less Gun: Motor Vehicle Stop on Beacon Street Enables BPD Officers to Arrest One on Gun-Related Charges while Recovering a Firearm

ONE LESS GUN: At about 7:05PM, on Tuesday, October 9, 2018, officers from District A-1 (Downtown) were on patrol in the area of Beacon and Spruce Streets when officers observed a motor vehicle fail to yield for a pedestrian who was crossing Beacon Street while in the crosswalk. In light of the violation, officers activated their lights and sirens and stopped the vehicle. Upon approaching the car, officers observed that the vehicle had four occupants. While talking to the operator, officers promptly noted that the occupants of vehicle appeared to be nervous. In particular, the front seat passenger looked to be extremely anxious as officers noted the individual to have a wide-eyed, anxious expression on his face while breathing heavily.

In the best interest of officer safety while sensing that the front seat occupant may be armed, officers instructed all of the occupants to exit the car. While conducting a pat frisk on the front seat passenger, the officers immediately felt a hard object consistent with the handle of a firearm (see photo). The officers quickly took possession of a silver-colored firearm found in the suspect’s waist area and secured the firearm.

Officers arrested Owen Harding, 25, of Boston and charged him with the Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Large Capacity Feeding Device, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, Carrying a Loaded Large Capacity Firearm and Unlawful Possession of Large Capacity Firearm Inside a Vehicle.

The other three occupants of the vehicle were later released.
