One Less Gun: Officers Recover Loaded Firearm during Early Morning Motor Vehicle Stop in Roxbury

At about 2:45 AM on Friday, March 23, 2018, officers from District B-2 (Roxbury) were on patrol in the area of Seaver Street and Humboldt Avenue when they observed a vehicle, occupied by two individuals, operating without headlights. Officers conducted a stop of the vehicle and approached both the driver and passenger sides. The officer on the passenger side noticed that the front seat passenger, later identified as 24-year-old Jaquan D. Sales of Dorchester, was visibly nervous. For their safety, the officer asked if there were any weapons in the vehicle, to which Sales replied no, but quickly reached for a knife that was attached to his pocket. The officer reached in the window and grabbed Sales’ hand and the knife before having him exit the vehicle. The officer conducted a pat frisk of Sales and the immediate area, including a backpack located on the floor of the passenger seat. The officer felt what was immediately recognizable as a firearm. The officer opened the backpack and confirmed that is was, in fact, a loaded revolver. Officers arrested Sales and charged him with Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, and Unlawfully Carrying a Loaded Firearm. The operator was issued a citation for Operating a Motor Vehicle without Headlights.
