One Less Gun: Officers Recover One Firearm and Arrest Suspect for an Incident That Took Place in the Fenway Area of Boston

At about 12:14AM on Thursday, July 12, 2018, Officers assigned to District D-4 (South End) responded to call for shots fired in the area of 112 Jersey Street, Boston. Officers received information from the 911 dispatcher that the suspect, described as a black male in his 20's, wearing a black hat, black tank top and white shorts, fled the scene in what appeared to be a green Chevrolet.  Officers responding to the scene observed a green Chevrolet at the corner of Tremont Street and Ruggles Street, being operated by a black male wearing a black shirt.

Upon activating their lights and sirens, officers observed the operator duck down, reach toward the passenger seat and quickly accelerated onto Ruggles Street. Officers observed the suspect’s vehicle drive through multiple stop signs on Ruggles Street and Shawmut Avenue, but while attempting to turn onto Washington Street at a high rate of speed, the suspect crashed through a fence and struck a tree forcing it to come to an abrupt stop. The suspect got out of the motor vehicle, fled on foot through numerous yards and jumped over fences in the Orchard Park area. When officers caught up to the suspect, later identified as, Shawn Tyler, 29, of Boston, he began to physically assault the officers on scene.

Back at the scene of the crash, officers recovered a silver Ruger 357 Magnum New Model Blackhawk with one live cartridge and four spent shell casings, recovered from the front passenger side of the suspects motor vehicle. Shawn Tyler was arrested and charged with Unlawful Possession of a Firearm and Assault and Battery on a Police Officer, and numerous violations of the auto laws. He will be arraigned in Roxbury District Court.
