ONE LESS GUN: At about 12:45 AM on Sunday July 22, 2018, officers assigned to the Youth Violence Strike Force made an onsite firearm arrest in the area of 154 Heath Street in Roxbury. The officers were on patrol in the Bromley Heath Housing Development when they stopped to investigate two males who were loitering in a parking lot. As the officers exited their vehicle, one of the individuals, later identified as Eddy Baez, 26, of Jamaica Plain, turned and took off running while clutching at the waistband area of his pants, leading the officers to believe that he may be armed. Officers pursued the suspect on foot through a nearby courtyard and were approximately ten feet behind him when they observed him pull a large gun (see photo) out of his pants with his right hand. Officers continued their pursuit, with their firearms now drawn, while giving numerous verbal commands for the suspect to drop the weapon, which he refused. As the officers closed in on the suspect, he threw the firearm into a nearby descending staircase in the area of 9 Horan Way. Officers were finally able to catch up to the fleeing suspect in the area of 11 Bickford Street where he was placed in custody after a brief but violent struggle. Officers were then able to recover the discarded firearm which was determined to be a fully loaded 9mm AA Arms AP9 pistol. The suspect will appear in Roxbury District Court on multiple charges including Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, Carrying a Loaded Firearm and Resisting Arrest.
