One Less Gun: BPD Officers Bravely Disarm Belligerent Motorist Refusing to Stop for Officers in Mattapan

BPD Officers Bravely Disarm Belligerent Motorist Refusing to Stop for Officers in Mattapan: At about 3:57pm, on Tuesday, July 3, 2018, officers assigned to the Youth Violence Strike Force were on patrol when they observed a motor vehicle take an illegal turn in the area of Blue Hill Avenue and Morton Street. In light of the infraction, officers activated their emergency equipment (lights and sirens) in order to conduct a stop of the vehicle. While retrieving the operator’s license and registration, officers noted that the operator appeared to be nervous, apprehensive and breathing heavily. Fearing the presence of a weapon, officers asked the operator to exit the motor vehicle. When officers attempted to open the driver's door, the operator immediately put his car into drive, slammed on the accelerator and attempted to flee the scene. However, one of the officers, who was able to dive into the vehicle, struggled and fought with the operator in an effort to gain control of the car. After a lengthy struggle, the officer was able to rip the keys out of the ignition while bringing the car to a rolling stop. With the vehicle stopped, officers immediately took the suspect into custody. A search of the vehicle enabled officers to locate and confiscate a large bag of marijuana, a black Heckler & Koch 9mm firearm (see photo) and close to $2,000 in US Currency.

Officers arrested Aaren Howard, 28, of Boston and charged him with the Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, Carrying a Loaded Firearm on a Public Way, Assault and Battery with a Dangerous Weapon (Motor Vehicle), Failure to Stop for Police and Possession with Intent to Distribute a Class D Drug (Marijuana).
