At about 12:40 AM on Saturday, July 7, 2018, officers from District B-2 (Roxbury) conducted a traffic stop of a vehicle in the area of 315 Norfolk Avenue, Dorchester.
While on patrol officers observed a vehicle traveling in the above area with excessively tinted windows. Officers activated the emergency blue lights and sirens on their cruiser and conducted a traffic stop. The two officers approached the vehicle on either side and observed that it was occupied by the operator, later identified as 19-year-old Anthony Silva, and a 19-year-old male in the front passenger seat. As one of the officers engaged in conversation with the Silva, the officer on the passenger’s side observed through the open window in plain view a firearm protruding from underneath the driver’s seat. The officer who was speaking to Silva immediately opened the driver’s door and ordered Silva to exit the car. Silva then put the vehicle into drive and attempted to flee the stop. The officer was able to enter the vehicle and gain control of Silva’s upper body while pulling the emergency brake, causing the tires to screech and the vehicle to come to a sudden stop. After a brief struggle, the officer was then able to reach down and seize the firearm, while at the same time Silva was attempting to reach for the gun.
The officer secured the loaded Smith & Wesson M&P 9mm firearm and placed both occupants into handcuffs for safety. When Silva could not produce a license to carry, officers placed him under arrest and charged him with Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, Unlawfully Carrying a Loaded Firearm, Unlawful Possession of a High Capacity Feeding Device, Possession of a Firearm with Altered/Obliterated Serial Number, and Assault and Battery on a Police Officer. Silva was also cited for Excessive Window Tint and Failure to Submit to an Officer. The passenger was identified and released. Silva will be arraigned in Roxbury District Court.
