BPD in the Community: We Belong - Youth Through Leadership Program Visits Washington D.C.

BPD in the Community: Over April vacation, members of the BPD travelled to Washington D.C. with a group of area youths to participate in a four-day trip focusing on civic engagement. On their second day, the group travelled to Arlington National Cemetery and made the climb up to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier where they solemnly watched the Changing of the Guard. They also visited the office of newly elected Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley before meeting with officers assigned to the Metropolitan Police Department’s Youth and Family Services Division. Day three brought a quick stop at the United States Capitol and the Supreme Court as well as a visit to the Martin Luther King Memorial. The trip concluded with tours of two esteemed area universities, Georgetown and Howard.

The trip was planned as part of the We Belong: Empowering Youth Through Leadership Program which was established to help young people succeed by connecting them with civic leaders, nonprofit and business executives as well as elected officials.

We would like to thank our officers for giving of their time to help make special memories for this group of future leaders.
