Two in Custody and Loaded Firearm Recovered After BPD Officers Respond to Motor Vehicle Accident in Dorchester

SAFER BOSTON: At about 2:58 AM on Tuesday April 30, 2019, officers assigned to District C-11 (Dorchester) arrested two individuals on firearm related charges after responding to a motor vehicle accident in the area of 317 Geneva Avenue in Dorchester. On arrival, officers located a damaged vehicle resting against a fence and observed a female, later identified as Melinda Lopes, 23, of Dorchester, seated in the driver’s seat. Officers made contact with the female party who immediately became argumentative and uncooperative while stating on several occasions that she had not been operating the vehicle at the time of the accident. When the officers requested further information, she exited the vehicle in an agitated state and pushed one of the officers at which time she was placed in custody without incident.

While the officers were securing the female suspect, a male, later identified as Jason Monteiro, 22, of Roxbury, approached the damaged vehicle and attempted to open the driver’s side door. As officers directed the male away from the car, a witness approached and informed them that the male party had been operating the motor vehicle at the time of the accident before switching seats with the female suspect who had been a passenger before the collision. Officers continued their investigation at which time they located and recovered a loaded 9mm Diamondback handgun from inside the vehicle. Officers then placed the male suspect in custody without incident.

Both parties will appear in Dorchester District Court for arraignment. Jason Monteiro was issued a motor vehicle citation as a result of the accident and will be charged with Unlawful Possession of a Firearm and Unlawful Possession of Ammunition. Melinda Lopes will be charged with Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition and Assault and Battery on a Police Officer.
