Suspect in Custody and Loaded Firearm Recovered After BPD Officers Respond to Call for Shots Fired in the South End

ONE LESS GUN: At about 8:44 PM on Tuesday July 16, 2019, officers assigned to District D-4 (South End) responded to a call for shots fired in the area of 20 East Berkeley Street in the South End. During the incident, the suspect, later identified as Jesus Diaz, 36, of Roxbury, was observed firing a handgun at two adult males before fleeing the area on foot. There were no resulting injuries. In the immediate aftermath, numerous community members came forward to assist responding detectives with their investigation, leading to the identification of the suspect.

At about 2:10 AM on Wednesday July 17, 2019, officers observed and stopped the suspect while on directed patrol in the area of Washington Street and Mystic Street. Officers were able to place the suspect in custody without incident at which time they safely recovered a loaded .380 caliber Ruger LCP handgun from inside a backpack that was in the suspect’s possession.

The suspect will appear in Boston Municipal Court on multiple charges including Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, Carrying a Loaded Firearm, Assault by Means of a Dangerous Weapon and Discharging a Firearm within 500 Feet of a Dwelling.
