Quick Thinking by an Off-Duty Boston Police Officer Leads to Gun Arrest


At about 12:08 AM on Wednesday, July 24, 2019, officers assigned to District C-6 (South Boston) made an on-site firearm arrest, after a traffic stop, in the area of 492 West Broadway Street in South Boston.

An off-duty Boston Police officer observed a motor vehicle of interest, involved in a shooting that took place on Tuesday, July 22, 2019, at approximately 2:22 PM, in the area of Mount Pleasant Street and Vine Street in Roxbury. The officer immediately contacted District B-2 Detectives (Roxbury), and kept a visual on the motor vehicle as it parked in front of 429 West Broadway. A few moments later, the motor vehicle pulled back out into traffic, and on duty-officers arriving on scene activated their emergency lights and sirens in attempt to conducted a traffic stop of the motor vehicle.

During the traffic stop, officers recovered a Black High Point, Model C9, 9MM Luger Firearm with 1 round in the chamber and 7 rounds in the magazine from the suspect, later identified as, Aaron Powell, 29, of Brockton.

Mr. Powell was placed under arrest and charged with the following; Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, and Carrying a Loaded Firearm on a Public Way. He will be arraigned in South Boston District Court.
