BPD Remembers The Service And Sacrifice Of Officer George J. Hanley Who Died On This Day 85 Years Ago: The men and women of the Boston Police Department remember the service and sacrifice of Officer George J. Hanley who died on this day, March 20, 1934, 85 years ago after suffering injuries in the line of duty several years earlier. Officer Hanley’s death came as a result of injuries sustained when he was struck by a police vehicle years prior.
The 46-year-old Hanley was an 8-year veteran of the department at the time of his death. He was survived by his wife and two daughters.
Officer Hanley was laid to rest at the Mt. Hope Cemetery in Mattapan and his name is located on the National Law Enforcement Memorial, Panel 25, West Line 5. In Boston, his name is etched in the Wall of Honor at BPD Headquarters and the Mass Law Enforcement Memorial located on the grounds of the Massachusetts State House.
