WHAT:          Tomorrow, Thursday, July 19, 2018, officers and Cops for Kids with Cancer will treat children from the Pediatric Oncology Unit at Mass General Hospital to a ride on a police boat with the Boston Police Harbor Patrol Unit. On Wednesday, August 1, 2018, children from the Pediatric Oncology Unit at Tufts New England Medical Center will also be given an opportunity to ride on the BPD boats. The children will also receive a police escort from each hospital to the Harbor Unit base.

WHEN:          Both nights, Thursday July 18 and Wednesday, August 1, at about 5:30 PM children will board BPD vans and be escorted from the hospital to the BPD Harbor Patrol Unit base.

All are welcome to greet the Recruits and Academy Staff on arrival in front of Headquarters and at the Memorial.

WHAT:          On Saturday, January 6, 2018, BPD Captain Kelley McCormick had the privilege of meeting by chance Wendi and Kevin Malenfant and their 19-year-old daughter, Kori, in North Station, who were looking for a place to put their luggage while they found somewhere to keep warm. The Malenfant family explained that they were making the trip home to Portland after visiting New York for Kori's brain surgery when they missed their connecting train in Boston by five minutes. Not only did Captain McCormick give them a place to put their luggage and warm up, but he went above and beyond the call of duty, personally drove them in his cruiser all the way back to their car in Portland.

This year, over three hundred kids from every neighborhood in Boston will be paired with a first responder to pick out a special holiday gift. In addition to officers from the BPD, volunteers include first responders from the following agencies:

Media Availability/Photo Opportunity: Officers to Hand Out Bike Light Kits on Southwest Corridor in Jamaica Plain

WHO: BPD District E-13 (Jamaica Plain) officers and City Wide Bicycle Unit officers

WHAT: Over the last several years, the BPD has worked diligently to support neighborhood initiatives focused on the safety of pedestrians and bicyclists on our roadways. The officers at Boston Police District E-13 have developed several partnerships with local businesses in J.P. who have supported “Vision Zero” and our mission to reduce fatal and serious traffic crashes to zero. One of these businesses generously donated bike light kits consisting of a headlight and taillight that can be assembled and attached to a bicycle without tools in less than 30 seconds. 

Tonight, officers will be set up on the Southwest Corridor to pull over cyclists, not to issue a citation, but to provide them with a donated bike light kit and educate them on the safety benefits of riding with a white headlight and red taillight.

WHAT: During the ceremony, 70 police recruits will be sworn in as police officers. Of the 70, 56 will immediately join the ranks of the BPD, while the remaining 14 recruits will be appointed to outside agencies including Chelsea, Dedham, Medford, Stoughton, Tisbury and Andover. In addition to the swearing in portion of the ceremony, badges will be presented to all officers by designated family members during the pinning ceremony. At the conclusion of the graduation, per tradition, Chief William Gross will make a citywide announcement on the police radio officially welcoming Class 56-16.

WHAT:          Beginning in June 2016, the Boston Police Youth Violence Strike Force, along with the ATF Boston group, initiated an investigation with the intent of focusing on two local street gangs. Over the course of this year-long investigation, several narcotics and firearm transactions were made, allowing officers to identify and build cases against numerous major players in these gangs. In June 2017, the culmination of this investigation allowed the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office to indict seventeen individuals on a total of 98 charges and seize 22 firearms. 
Arrest warrants and search warrants were executed on Tuesday June 13, 2017 and Wednesday June 14, 2017.

Hurley, Jr., family of Officer Frank Foley, retired members of the BPD Explosive Ordinance Unit, board members of the Boston Police Foundation, and members of the Boston Police Department.

WHAT:          Dedication and christening of the new Boston Police Department Harbor Patrol Unit 38’ SAFE Boat. The new, highly maneuverable and highly tactical boat will be named the “Jeremiah J. Hurley, Jr.” after the late Officer Hurley. BPD Officer Hurley (Jerry) was appointed on February 14, 1968. He served in several assignments before being assigned to the Boston Police Bomb Squad (EOD Unit). On October 28, 1991, Officer Hurley and his partner, Officer Frank Foley, responded to a call for a device under a motor vehicle in a residential neighborhood in Roslindale. During the investigation, the device detonated, fatally wounding Officer Hurley and critically wounding Officer Foley. Officer Hurley had served with the BPD for 23 years at the time of the incident; he was killed in the line of duty at age 50. Three of Officer Hurley’s children, David, Leanne, and Donald, followed in their father’s footsteps and currently work as officers for the BPD with 28, 22, and 20 years of service, respectively. It is with great pride and honor that the BPD Harbor Patrol Unit names its new boat after the late Officer Hurley.
